Change colors; add black colored yarn with H hook, single crochet around the trim (bottom of the hat) and sl st.

Ear flaps:

Make 2, H hook, black yarn,1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your black yarn, begin the dc stitches, (like to have the seam in the back of the hat.

So I do the ear flap on the side of the hat) 2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc directly across from the last dc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.

Row 1. ch 2. dc in the next 11 dc stitches, turn. -11 sts
Row 2. ch 2. dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -9
Row 3. ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st., turn. -7
Row 4. ch 2. dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -5
Row 5. ch 2. dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through -3

The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, use black and white yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut around the edge of the hat with white yarn.

Eyes: Make 2, G hook Black, white, Start with white yarn,
rnd 1: Ch 2, work 5 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st. (5sc)
rnd 2: work 2sc in each stitch around, (10sc) sl st. Change to black yarn,
rnd 3: *work 1 sc in the next stitch, 2sc in next stitch, *repeat from* around, sl st.
rnd 4: *work 1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, *repeat from *around, sl st.

rnd 6: turn, work 6 sc in the next 6 stitches, sl st, turn, work 5 sc in the next 5 sc, sl st. fasten off. The End of the eye with more black yarn; place that end of the eye by the nose. Place the eyes about 1/2 inch apart in the center of the hat, sew on black buttons in the center of the white yarn of the eyes, for the center of the eyes.

Ears: Make 2, G hook, Black yarn
rnd 1. ch 3, join with sl st. create a ring
rnd 2. 10 sc into the ring, sl st.
rnd 3. *2sc in the next st, *repeat to finish round (20sts.)
rnd 4. *1 sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, *repeat, sl st.
rnd 5. *1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next st, *repeat, sl st. Fold the circle in half, and sc the circle together to create a half circle. then sew the two half circles on top of the hat to create ears. Place the ears 2 inches apart on top of the hat.

Nose: Use black yarn and a yarn needle and sew a upside down triangle in the center of the muzzle and keep sewing with black yarn until you fill in the nose. fasten off. Place the nose below the eyes about 1 inch in the center.

With Yarn needle make a straight line down from the nose and one line of yarn about 2 inches long on one side of the straight line and one line of yarn on the other side of the straight line of yarn. This will create a smile.

easy pattern to follow. Thank you for sharing it. I post my panda hat on I made it for my 2 years old nephew.
Just one thing. I made year flaps a little bit on back, they aren't exactly in half of the hat.

My son came home from school and asked me to make him a "hat with a face" like his friend had. I'm so glad I found your pattern through a search on the internet! Can't wait to make this for him.

Love this pattern, thank you Amy for sharing it with us.

How exactly did you sew the ears to the top of the hat? I can't seem to get it right. And did you use white or black yarn for the sewing?

I used a yarn needle and sewed the the bottom of the ears to the hat on top and I used black yarn.
